Opal Facts #6 - Black Opals

Dark, yet brilliantly vibrant, Black Opal is the rarest and most valuable of all Opals. A term given to any Opal showing a dark body colour, Black Opals are known for their sharp colour hue. All of Tremonti's Black Opal jewellery comes from Lightning Ridge in Australia, and with Karin Tremonti's status as a Gemstone expert, you can only expect the best quality around.
A fantastic example is our magnificent Black Opal ring from the Sophisticated Range - weighing in at a stunning 22.53 carats! Celebrating this rare Opal in its own right, Karin Tremonti has hand-crafted a ring that highlights the Opal, rather than dwarfs it. And with Tremonti's classic attention to detail, style and comfort, it is naturally a smooth fit - a delight to wear...

Opal Facts #5 - Opal Fossils

By strange coincidence, and only by rare occasion, fossils found from the early Cretaceous period (115-100 million years ago) have been sometimes found where the bone is replaced by Opal! Not only beautiful, these rare archeological beauties are also very important to scientists, as the Opal's brilliant quality means that as the bone has been replaced by Opal sediment, the fossil is perfectly preserved.
Who said you can't be pretty and practical?

Opal Facts #4 - Opal Formation

Across the world precious opal occurs in very few locations because its formation requires very special conditions.
Scientific research and studies over the last two centuries have provided detail about the formation of most gemstones, but the Opal is still not properly understood. There are currently 3 theories as to the natural formation of Opal.

Deep Weathering
The most widely-accepted explanation since the 1960's, this theory supposes that around 30 million years ago deep weathering caused chemical changes to the earth' sediments, releasing large quantities of Silica, which collected in cracks to form Opal.

Syntectonic
Some believe that Opal has been formed via silica-laden fluids moving through the layers below the Earth's surface at temperatures over 100 degrees Celsius. When the earth's plates shift, the fluid can become trapped, creating Opal.

Microbe Model
A new theory presented by German Scientist Dr Hans-Jurgen Behr draws from the fact that he discovered evidence of rich aerobic soil bacteria and microbes within Opal (don't worry, Opals are perfectly safe and hygenic!). The bacteria can react, creating materials important in the formation of Opal.

This fantastic stone continues to mystify the scientiffic world - but at Tremonti we don't worry about how they might be made, we just focus on providing you with the best Opals around!

Opal Facts #3 - The birth of the Opal market in Australia

Tullie Corthwaite Wollaston, born in South Australia in 1863, braved life-threatening conditions to acquire Opal from early miners in remote, desolate areas. It was Wollaston who introduced Australian Opal to the rest of the world.

In the early 1900s Wollaston introduced the Australian Black Opal overseas. At first the London dealers thought Opal must have been treated because they had never seen Opal that looked so bright and beautiful.
Wollaston established many markets in Europe and the United States during the early 1900s.
Australia now produces areound 95% of the World's Opal supply and Australian Opal is prized the world over, thanks to the pioneering efforts of Tullie Wollaston.
The majority of Tremonti's Opal delights are sourced directly from Australia - so you have little bit of Wollaston's heritage in every gem!

Opal Facts #2 - The Stone of Hope

Throughout history Opals have been widely regarded as a stone of good fortune.
Already favoured throughout the British Empire as a regal gemstone of vibrant quality, in Roman times the gem was carried as a good luck charm or talisman, as it was believed that an Opal brought its owner good fortune.
Coupled with this belief for centuries, however, was the rumour that Opals brought bad luck - a concept developed for commercial reasons rather than any truth. It's bad luck if you don't have one!
Today, in a number of cultures, Opal is still carried or worn as a good luck charm.
Lucky Opal, the rainbow gem or "The Stone of Hope", is the birthstone of October. But you can get its fortunate properties no matter what month it is!

The Lucky Gemstone

Karin Tremonti is a gemmologist of considerable experience and her husband Mark Tremonti deals mainly in Opals of supreme quality, so if you need a bit of luck in your life, today is your day!

Opals have been used in the crowns of kings - the Crown Jewels of France and Hungary include an extensive selection of Opals. The Crown of the Holy Roman Empire contained an Opal stone. Napoleon presented his Empress with a magnificent Opal with brilliant red flashes - "The Burning of Troy".

It wasn't long before famous designers such as Tiffany, Lilque and Cartier began using Opals in their designs - and they have been extremely popular ever since!
So next time you think about slipping on an Opal delight, think of the regal style and famous history contained within the brilliant colours of this amazing gemstone.
