Opal Facts #3 - The birth of the Opal market in Australia

Tullie Corthwaite Wollaston, born in South Australia in 1863, braved life-threatening conditions to acquire Opal from early miners in remote, desolate areas. It was Wollaston who introduced Australian Opal to the rest of the world.

In the early 1900s Wollaston introduced the Australian Black Opal overseas. At first the London dealers thought Opal must have been treated because they had never seen Opal that looked so bright and beautiful.
Wollaston established many markets in Europe and the United States during the early 1900s.
Australia now produces areound 95% of the World's Opal supply and Australian Opal is prized the world over, thanks to the pioneering efforts of Tullie Wollaston.
The majority of Tremonti's Opal delights are sourced directly from Australia - so you have little bit of Wollaston's heritage in every gem!
